Choosing Colors
Going Green

First impressions are everything and paint color is one of the easiest and most dramatic ways to enhance that first impression. Our trained design consultants are happy to assist you with all of your color selections. Take a look at our color selection tips below for some ideas and recommendations.

Exteriors

  1. Get inspired: Drive through various neighborhoods, established and new, to see color in action. Make note of appealing color schemes and consider adapting them to your own home.
  2. Choose a scheme that compliments your neighborhood.   Is your house part of an HOA? Be sure to check with your community manager for color guidelines and restrictions.
  3. Windows are an excellent opportunity to incorporate bolder colors.  Outlining them in a contrasting color gives character to the building.
  4. Avoid accenting unattractive elements such as gutters, downspouts, garage doors, air conditioning units, etc.
  5. Don’t be afraid to ask for samples.  Most colors look different on the walls than they do on the swatch and no one likes surprises!

Interiors

  1. Select color schemes you enjoy from home decorating magazines and tear out any particularly appealing examples. Ask yourself if these colors will complement your furnishings.
  2. Remember that color usually seems more intense on walls than it does on a small sample card. It is always a good idea to paint a test sample onto the walls.  Watch how the color changes in different lighting (including artificial light) and evaluate it for a few days.  When in doubt, go a shade lighter.
  3. Keep in mind that Yellow and Peach tones give a room a warm feeling while Greens, Blues and Grays are cooler colors.
  4. Avoid stark white except in modern minimalist rooms, because it will seem too harsh. It's better to go with a cream white that has undertones of peach, beige or rose.  You can then use stark white for your trim pieces and moldings.
  5. Save bold color schemes for rooms where you don't spend long stretches of time, such as bathrooms and dining rooms. You may tire of these colors if they're in the home office, kitchen, or family room.  An accent wall is an excellent way to incorporate bolder colors into a large room without overpowering the space.
