What’s the risk?
VOC's can potentially cause a variety of problems, including: damage to the ozone layer, irritation of the eyes and lungs, asthma, breathing problems, and headaches.

Why do Paints contain VOC’s?
Traditional Paints are filled with chemicals that are added to make them last longer and prevent color fade. At the time it wasn’t realized just how dangerous many of these volatile organic compounds, or VOC's are. Alkyd based paints contain the most VOC’s. These paints, which are formulated for high gloss finishes and to prevent mold growth, can have up to 42% VOC content. Latex paints, although still containing chemicals, contain only 25-5% VOC.
Today Paint Manufacturers have improved dramatically and water based paints can be made that last just as long and maintain their true color with no problem without VOC's. They cost a bit more, but they are worth the slightly higher price. If you are looking for a Greener option, Advanced Painting Specialists suggests you use paints that are labeled VOC free, zero VOC's or No VOC's.

You can’t be fooled
When you open a can of paint, you'll be able to tell if it contains VOC's. If it has the harsh odors you recall from traditional paints it has VOC’s. Today's Greener paints without volatile organic compounds don't have a strong odor. Can you decorate with No VOC paints? Yes, beautifully! Thankfully, you can now find low and no VOC paints in just about every color and finish imaginable. Ask your sales associate for more information.
